Minions & Monsters, the Plot of the Movie

Minions & Monsters is the upcoming animated movie. It is the sequel to Minions 2 - The Rise of Gru, where the unicellular organisms try to become villains. The movie series started in 2015, after Brian Lynch was asked to write the script due to his previous work as a screenwriter for the theme park ride Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem.

The plot is set in a cinema history museum: during a guided tour, a girl notices two Minions statues, and the guide reveals their names, James and Henry. It starts from a different Minions tribe than the one that would later serve Gru: the tribe is searching for the greatest villains in the world but often ends up accidentally killing their masters. James, more artistic and passionate about painting and drawing, quickly forms a deep friendship with two other Minions, Henry and Ed. Among the many masters served by the Minions was an evil sorcerer, who is killed by a monster summoned by Henry from his spellbook, which Ed carries.

While fighting in the desert, the Minions come across a train robbery and decide to chase the robber to become his henchmen: but the robbery was a setup for a Hollywood movie production. Although director Max was furious with the Minions, producers Frank and Elwood remain fascinated by their antics, so Max hires them as movie stars. The Minions soon become a global phenomenon, appearing in several silent movies and living a Hollywood star life.

With the advent of sound cinema, they fail to adapt to the new technology due to their incomprehensible language. After causing the studio millions of dollars in unusable film material, the Minions are fired, but James has the idea to make a movie of their own titled Minions & Monsters, in which the Minions would fight giant creatures.

Jeff Bridges - who plays Frank and Elwood Bright, heads of a movie studio - said to The AU Review about the homage to old Hollywood in the movie: "this change is both scary and exciting. We have this AI technology that will change everything, man. It’s scary and exciting. It must have been like that when sound movies arrived."

Bobby Moynihan - playing Phillips, one of two creatures freed by Goomi - reiterated: "I love big scary characters who then turn out to be kind. It’s always fun in movies. Being chosen for a role like this, where you can play both sides, is fantastic. You can play this angry monster who maybe wants to eat the Minions, but then realizes they could be friends, or thinks: ‘Now I like making movies,’ and ends up in the movie industry. It’s fun and beautiful."

Pierre Coffin voices Kevin, Stuart, Bob, Otto since their beginning. Trey Parker is Goomi, a Cthulhu-like monster whose full name is Gary Orcam Oliver Magma Ichabod; Allison Janney is Olivia, a tour guide; Christoph Waltz is Max, a director who hires the Minions to star in his movies.

Jesse Eisenberg is Dort, an alien robot the Minions see as their potential leader, parodying and paying homage to the character Gort from the 1951 movie The Day the Earth Stood Still; Jeff Bridges is Frank and Elwood Bright, heads of a movie studio; Zoey Deutch is Debbie, a suffragette.

The direction is by Coffin himself. The production is by Chris Meledandri (read the interview), Janet Healy, and Chris Renaud, for Illumination. The movie releases in the United States on July 1, 2026.

The Minions Movie Series

Together with the Despicable Me series - of which Minions is a spin-off - the Minions saga is one of the most successful animated franchises ever, produced by Illumination and Universal. No details have yet leaked about a possible sequel: Minions 2 - The Rise of Gru received good reviews from critics, with a 70% score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and has so far grossed around $833.6 million worldwide. The first movie from 2015 grossed $1.15 billion, the second $940 million.
