Interview with actor of movie Joker, Josh Pais
Going back to Joker, how was your working relationship with Joaquin Phoenix? Do you think his Oscar is deserved?
I really wanted to be a part of Joker not only to work with the talented director, Todd Phillips, but I was very curious about what it’d be like to work with Joaquin. I think he is one of the most brilliant and spontaneous actors of our time - and I always want to learn from the greats.
On set everyone knew Phoenix was digging deep. There was a sense he was brining his A-game - and that made everyone else do their absolute best work. The set was focused and challenging - in a wonderfully creative way. Every take Joaquin and I did was different - we let it be different - we honored the magic of the moment. There was no chit chat between takes - we all went to our corners until the bell rung - and it was time to jump into unknown fully committed.
And yes, I absolutely think Joaquin Phoenix deserved the Oscar. He fully embodied the character. He threw down an engaging, completely spontaneous and creatively impulsive performance. It was brilliant
