The Plot of the Movie Girls Like Girls

Girls Like Girls is the upcoming drama movie. Set in rural Oregon, it focuses on Coley (Maya da Costa), a seventeen-year-old girl forced to move to a new town after her mother's death. It's 2006, and Coley must start over from scratch.

In her new life she meets Sonya (Myra Molloy), and an immediate attraction develops between the two. But Coley hesitates to open her heart: she's never been with a girl before, and Sonya has a boyfriend.

The Movie Trailer

"You're very pretty" Sonya says to Coley in the released trailer, and she responds: "I think you're very pretty too." "I don't know what I want" Sonya justifies herself to her boyfriend, and later Coley sees the two kissing. "I don't want to hurt you Coley, but what would people think" Sonya justifies herself.

The Movie Cast

Maya Da Costa acted in the miniseries Under the Bridge (TV series) and in the movie Marty Supreme (movie); Myra Molloy appeared in He's All That (movie) and in 2025 made her Broadway debut in the role of Eurydice in Hadestown (theatrical musical).

Also present are Levon Hawke, son of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, in the role of Sonya's boyfriend; Zach Braff, who plays Coley's single father and is known for his character in Scrubs (TV series) and in the series Shrinking (TV series).

Direction and Production

The direction is by Hayley Kiyoko - making her feature-length debut - who has directed numerous music videos of her songs, including "Girls Like Girls", "Cliff's Edge", "Gravel to Tempo", "One Bad Night", "Sleepover", "Feelings".

The screenplay is adapted from her 2023 novel: the original music video of "Girls Like Girls", released in 2015 and directed by Kiyoko together with Austin S. Winchell, already told the story of a girl who falls in love with her new friend, despite her having a violent boyfriend. The video ended with the two girls running away together and kissing.

The production is by Marc Platt Productions with Focus Features distribution. Filming took place in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada from July to August 2024. Girls Like Girls is released in US theaters on June 19, 2026.
