Eternity, the Plot of the Movie

Eternity is the upcoming comedy movie. The plot centers on a reality where—in the afterlife—souls have one week to decide where to spend eternity. Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) faces the choice between the man with whom she spent her life, Larry (Miles Teller), and her first love, Luke (Callum Turner), who died young and has waited decades for her arrival.

Director and co-screenwriter David Freyne told Slash Film, “I believe sincerity in cinema belonged to greats like Billy Wilder, Sturges, or Lubitsch. I really wanted to bring that spirit to this movie… it’s an exploration of what we consider love and happiness, and we always maintained this essential truth throughout the making of the movie, talking with the actors and working with everyone.”

“I always tend to gravitate toward projects that involve me emotionally,” Miles Teller told Collider. “I felt immense emotion for Larry and this couple when I read the screenplay. It had been a while since I’d done a comedy. This was very character-driven. And I think romantic comedies, when well-made, give audiences everything. They make you laugh. They might make you cry. This isn’t a movie built with a series of jokes. There’s a funnier version of this movie, but I don’t think that interested us.”

“I guess the operation didn’t go very well,” says a nurse to Larry while they’re on a train, in the released trailer. Then he meets Joan, and Luke joins them as well: “I never dreamed of you so clearly,” she says, surprised. “You’re exactly as I dreamed you,” he responds. “You’ll have to remind her why she fell in love with you,” a staff member advises Larry.

Eternity, the Cast of the Movie

Miles Teller has acted in Top Gun: Maverick, Spiderhead, The Gorge, and the TV series The Offer. Elizabeth Olsen participated in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, after being in the WandaVision series in the role of Wanda Maximoff.

Callum Turner is the performer in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore and episodes of Masters of the Air, and will be in Rosebush Pruning - I pugni in tasca, a remake of Marco Bellocchio’s movie.

The cast also includes Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who has acted in The Holdovers, Dolemite Is My Name, and episodes of Only Murders in the Building. The direction is by David Freyne, who has previously directed Dating Amber and The Cured. Pat Cunnane wrote the screenplay, which appeared on the Black List of best unproduced scripts of 2022.

Eternity, Filming and Release Date of the Movie

The production is by A24 and Star Thrower Entertainment. Filming began on May 24, 2024, in Vancouver and concluded on July 5. The movie was presented at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, and releases in United States theaters on November 26, 2025.

Eternity, Critical Reviews

According to The Wrap, “at first glance, Eternity is a sweet, spiritual, and ironically twisted interpretation of what dreams might realize in the afterlife, but it remains true to its premise with a cast that expresses exceptional comedy.”

For The Hollywood Reporter, “the premise is so bold that it’s surprising there isn’t already a movie proposing it. Eternity leverages its captivating wit for both spicy comedy and confused sentimentalism.”

For the San Francisco Chronicle, “everything becomes silly, monotonous, and boring. Perhaps not as monotonous as being catapulted into the void, but boring enough to make you fall asleep.”
