Recently premiering in theatres on March 21, Locked follows Eddie (Bill Skarsgård), a desperate thief breaking into a car, only to find himself ensnared in a deadly game of survival. Belonging to retired wealthy doctor William (Anthony Hopkins), the car is a sophisticated death trap, perfected from the six prior break-ins.

William subjects Eddie to psychological and physical torment, exploring themes of control, punishment, and the consequences of crime. David Yarovesky offers a tense, claustrophobic experience from start to finish, digging into a plethora of emotions for the two characters.

Tension in the movie Locked

Tension is built effectively through the confined setting, ensuring the audience feels just as trapped as Eddie. Skarsgård gripping performance as Eddie portrays fear, frustration, and determination with raw intensity. Hopkins, as always, commands the screen with a calm and ruthless demeanor.

While Yarovesky heavily relies on psychological thriller tropes, in the beginning, to set the scene and develop his characters, the predictability eventually fades as William continues to torture Edward.

While strong performances are delivered from the actors, the film doesn’t necessarily revolutionize the thriller genre. The car itself feels like a character, a designed prison reflecting William’s calculated mind.

If you’re a fan of the psychological thriller genre, Locked is a solid watch with great individual performances. However, for those looking for something groundbreaking, it may not leave a lasting impression. While suspense lovers may enjoy the trip to the theater, others may find it better suited for streaming later on when it’s released.
