Cadet, the film in competition at the Berlinale with the soundtrack by Sandro Di Stefano
09-02-2025

Cadet is the drama film in competition at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival. The plot revolves around Alina and her son Serik, who are taken on a tour of Kazakhstan's military school facilities by its principal. Alina will teach history here, and Serik will attend the school as a cadet: but discipline doesn't work for the shy boy, with his girlish hairstyle making him a target for malice and bullying, despite having the right connections, as Serik's biological father is a high-ranking person. When a student dies, the question everyone asks is whether it's murder or suicide.

The film is directed by Adilkhan Yerzhanov, and the soundtrack is by Sandro Di Stefano, an Italian composer and orchestra conductor. "For years I've been chasing the Berlinale, because this is where the avant-garde is celebrated, where the trend is set," says Di Stefano. "It's rare today for cinema to meet musical experimentation, and Cadet is exactly that (...) I'm certain that all of this will emerge from watching the film." Among the most distinctive tracks is "Ultrem," a composition for seven voices: the contemporary writing of the track uses the overlapping of seven vocal lines of the same "infant" voice, creating a spatial movement during listening that destabilizes the viewer's emotional orientation. "This symbolic element represents the souls of the cadets in the institute."

He has received numerous awards, including the Chioma di Berenice Award (2016) and the Polish Film Festival Award (2017), the Kazakh Academy Critics' Award (2021), and is an official member of the European Film Academy and the Polish Academy "Orly".
