Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: meeting with Harrison Ford and the cast of the movie
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is out in theaters
Indiana
Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the upcoming adventure film. It is the fifth
film in the saga inaugurated in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark, which was
directed by Steven Spielberg and written by George Lucas. In the new film we
are in 1969, in the midst of the Cold War: archaeologist and adventurer Indiana
Jones (Harrison Ford) opposes the space race because the United States had
recruited former Nazis to beat the Soviet Union in this competition.
The cast
includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen and John Rhys-Davies, directed by
James Mangold. We met the cast at the Taormina Film Festival presentation.
The film was also shot in Italy.
Harrison Ford. We had the fantastic opportunity to shoot here, in Sicily, and that added to the appeal of the film. We filmed in Syracuse.
How did you approach this retelling of the Indiana Jones story?
Harrison
Ford. I really liked the script. With Mangold, the director, every time we
showed up on set, we got briefings. The script highlights some well-elaborated
relationships between the characters. The energy on the set was great. The plot
is beautiful but complicated. Forty-two years ago Indiana was young, mighty,
and now it's 1944-Indiana is young, through a computerized process that I can't
explain. They went and searched the various pictures of me to match the light
that appeared in the pictures.
Then we find him again in 1969, when he is retiring: he has problems, however, in his personal relationships, and the character played by Phoebe comes along. From here the new story begins.
What was it like to play the villain of the situation, Jürgen Voller's character?
Mads Mikkelsen. As far as character work goes, I try to make
the villains become the villains of their world, making them as believable as
possible.
What made you decide to reinterpret Indiana Jones?
Harrison Ford. I only revisit characters if I think the film being made can add something to what has been done before. We always had the goal of bringing in some new aspect. It is the last time we will see Indiana Jones, and we had to make this story feel right.
How has the character of Indiana Jones grown?
Harrison Ford. He is an ordinary person, an archaeologist who is in an extraordinary world. I wanted the audience to feel his triumph, his fears. I'm not interested in the kinetic aspects per se: everything has to do with the character. Now, in the twilight of her life, she behaves differently.
What is your relationship with the character of Helena?
Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Helena is brave, she has no idea what the consequences of her actions might be. I would say I learned, from her, that attitude.
What is the target audience?
Harrison Ford. It's an action film and for families: it's
not a textbook on physics. James was a great director.
What projects would you like to be involved in?
Harrison
Ford. I would love to fight zombies (he laughs).
