Actors Charlotte Nicdao & David Hornsby from the cast of the Apple TV+ comedy series Mythic Quest

As the series progresses, viewers get to feel the development of a character and see how their dynamic plays in with the others. For you two, what have been the most fun aspects of your characters to evolve?
Charlotte: I really feel like we get to see Poppy, from season one through four into some of the most formative years of her life. And, um, we see her make a lot of mistakes at the beginning of her adult life in terms of maybe placing her priorities in the wrong places, maybe, uh, letting her ego get to her. Um, and that's always so much fun to get to play. And the thing that I find really interesting about season four is that we find her at the beginning of the season in a place where she's quite well balanced for the first time in her life. She's got this work-life balance. She is maybe happy for the first time in her life. But, of course, it's Mythic Quest, so things can't stay that way forever. But it was a really fun thing to get to play with in those early episodes.
David: I always like the dynamics of each character and what comes out when you combine different combinations of characters. So, it's always fun. My scenes with Poppy or Charlotte are always a lot different than my scenes with Ian. So, it's always fun to sort of keep playing with the dynamics. I'm usually the pawn in everyone's game though, that being said.
As the show has matured, maybe there's a groove, everything feels smoother. What, if any, challenges arose for you shooting season four?
David: I'm trying to think, that's an interesting question. We were ambitious this season. We have a sort of Agatha Christie/ Glass Onion, uh, episode. And we have a very surprising breakaway episode. Even just budgetarily, we sort of were dreaming big. So, I think we had to find, you know, “if we're gonna go big here, where can we go small too?”, so we could deliver like a great season. Also, it made us look at, you know, this is a workplace comedy, and at the end of the day, the funny and the heart of the show is putting characters in these rooms together. It allowed us the challenge of making sure we could deliver what we wanted to and also remain at the scale of our show. It made us some focus on what really mattered so we could make the office comedy as good as it can be. It was a nice framework to work in.
Charlotte: And I really think it's such a credit to the writers that this season, season four for me is our, is our best season yet. It's my favorite season. I feel like it's hitting all the things that, that I personally love about Mythic Quest and about our show, but it's also doing some things that are totally unexpected that I think are really exciting. I can't wait for people to see it.
How much of Poppy and David's dialogue is stuff that you kind come up with on the fly, or that just feels right in the moment in the scene?
Charlotte: I think you'd be surprised how much what Poppy says is what is written. Like, the writers at this point, really, really get the character and I am not funny at them. I'm not on the writing team. I feel like sometimes maybe I'll even throw something in and I'm sure in the edit, it's like, “well, nice try. Um, but, uh, no”. I think one of the great things about being in a fourth season now is that we are all really comfortable. So, it is fun to get to come into a scene, and there'll always be a sort of natural moment where you might want to throw something in. And I think we all bounce off of each other really well. And we know each other's characters too.So, it's cool. You can sort of set each other up for something that's funny because you're like, “oh you know what would be funny, if I give this to David, then he would be able to do that” and vice versa. It's always a little bit of both, but I mean, the scripts are really good.
David: Yeah. I think we have the looseness that on a second, third take, we are throwing in things here and there just, just because, you know, the, the writing is, is also, it's more, it's more than a blueprint, but it's a way to also discover the scene live. You know, you have to keep it live and we're changing things when we rehearse the scene, then we're changing things when we, when we do the scene. And certainly, you know, Rob (McElhenney)and I having worked together for so long at It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, are always pitching to each other. Uh, what if you say this? And then I say that. Great.
