Taika Waititi wrote the screenplay himself, and it resonated with me. There were just a few scenes from the book I wished could have found their way in, and he allowed me to give it a go, but I found that the script was so tight, those scenes would have tilted the fine balance and so I realised my scene with the snail didn't have to be there, nor the one where Johannes and his best friend pluck each other's hairs out of their noses and ears, for fear the Fuhrer might think less of them.
