Jojo Rabbit, interview with author Christine Leunens
Jojo Rabbit's screenplay, based on Christine Leunens' novel, is an Oscar nominee.
A “Can of Sunshine” is about a relationship of love and hate, between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Why did you choose this particular theme?
Because even in times of peace, the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law can cause a lot of unhappiness to not only them, but also the son/husband caught in between... so for my PhD I started by studying the relationship anthropologically, psychologically and sociologically, finding that as far back as I could go historically and in any culture around the world, it seemed to be always strained. I went into depth to understand why, then wanted to create a novel where the two women start out at odds with each other, and then letting the son/husband die, I wanted to see how their relationship would go.
