Natalie Moon Interview

Welcome, Natalie Moon. You’re part of the cast of *Backrooms*, one of the hottest films of the moment with a major box office hit. Can you tell us about your role?

I play Phil's wife, Abby, in the film. Phil is played by the incredibly talented Mark Duplass, who is truly a champion for independent film and filmmakers and It was a joy to act beside him. We also had two young actors playing our on-screen sons who were brilliant, capable, and so professional, I have no doubt we'll be seeing more of them. Kane had a very specific vision he was bringing to life, and I felt lucky to be a small piece of that puzzle. Interestingly, the scene originally had a lot of dialogue, but Kane's decision to make it silent was inspired and it added so much to the creepy nature of the film.

What do you think fans can expect from *Backrooms*, directed by the very young Kane Parsons?

Backrooms is a film that really makes you confront your own reality and your place in it. It asks questions about what might exist beyond the constraints of everyday life, the unsettling feeling that there's something just beneath the surface of the world we think we know.

The fans have their own theories about the Backrooms being a liminal purgatory, a space between spaces your mind accidentally slips into which is also super interesting.
But at its heart, it's a very human story about mental health, that feeling of being untethered after a life changing event and trying to find your way back to yourself. I think that's what I resonate with most and what will resonate with a lot of audience members.

Can you share an anecdote from the Backrooms cast that particularly amused or impressed you?

Not really an anecdote but a fun fact: the two young actors playing our sons were in fact brothers in real life and were cast together.

Among your television projects, you’re one of the stars of The Audacity; your character, Jen, appears in four episodes. It’s a series that explores human relationships and their conflicts set in Silicon Valley. Who is Jen? The character you play.

Jen is an unapologetic incredibly rich mother with a child at the same school as Jamison (Ava-Marie Telek). She is so out-spoken about her wokeness that it could easily actually be construed as racism. Her wealth has given her such a lack of understanding of the real world and of people not in the same financial situation as her, much the same as the rest of the cast. She was so fun to play and I'm excited for season 2.

Who is Natalie Moon when she’s not on set? Does she have any hobbies?

I am a self proclaimed tea addict, and enjoy snuggling up with a good book and my little dog Ozzie in my lap. I may or may not have a Lego addiction and I love a good puzzle - be it at trivia night, video games or deep in the depths of an escape room. Ooh... Backrooms escape room, anyone? When I'm not acting I'm an accent coach, I'm currently helping cast members in two shows filming in Vancouver.

Is there a character you’ve played that you’re particularly fond of?

I'll always have a soft spot for the awkward Inspector Jane I had the pleasure of playing on the The Flash. When I was first cast I had auditioned with a U.S. accent but after meeting the director he asked if I could play the character with a British accent and at first her literal nature came across as a little rude and cold with a British accent so I had to warm her up a lot to ensure she was still a likable, clever if not a little naive character.

What are Natalie Moon’s future projects? What will your next roles be?

The new reboot of Private Eyes, Private Eyes: West Coast is soon to be released where I play Sofia Labaki alongside the hilarious & talented Jason Priestly and the effervescent Cindy Sampson who were both a riot on set and so lovely to work beside. The show is set in Victoria, BC, and follows the duo's crime-solving escapades in a new city; I can't really say much else about it other than that, but watch out for the release later this year.
