Reminders of Him, Hilary Jardine interview

Welcome, Hilary Jardine. From your debut in the TV series Psych to your Leo Award nomination for Van Helsing, we have enjoyed watching your career evolve, and we look forward to seeing you soon in Reminders of Him. Can you tell us about your role as Mary Anne in Reminders of Him?

Wow, thank you so much. That's very kind. I had a great time playing Mary Anne, and was honoured to have the privilege as I really loved the book. Mary Anne is an expectant mother working in Ledger's bar Wards- she lives a simple life and works hard with a gamely sense of humor and curiosity. I tend to love characters that are rough diamonds.

Do you have any anecdotes from the set of Reminders of Him that you can share with your fans?

Vanessa Caswill is a very special director. I learned a lot from her, and benefitted as an actor from the way she cultivates the perfect energy and culture on set. That is also, of course, attributed to a powerhouse producing team of women (Gina, Robin, Lauren, Colleen) rooted in Colleen Hoover's infectious and delicious work. I am grateful for the time that I got to watch and work with Maika. I really admire her. She does beautiful, intelligent and raw work as an actor and I took notes on her professionalism and way of moving through the day. I had a hoot of a time with Tyriq and Nic, who happen to be best friends in real life as well as on set, and can be complete goofballs when the time is right, which made working into the wee hours of the morning feel easy and fun for the whole crew. They were also deeply kind, talented and supportive scene partners to play with. It was a dream! I'm grateful.

You made your professional mark by appearing in various TV series, including Smallville, Supernatural and Fringe. You also had recurring roles in Van Helsing and Somewhere Between. Is there a role you would like to reprise among those you have already played?

Oh man. I've been lucky to play many types of characters. I have a lot of fun working, period. It's really hard to choose. I learned from them all. Maybe Mildred on Upload- she was a bit of an untapped well for me.

In 2025, as well as being in the cast of Reminders of Him, you were also in the cast of the drama series Untamed. Although you often play supporting characters, they play an essential role in defining the main characters. A prime example of this is your portrayal of Susan Jackson in Van Helsing, in which you demonstrated great versatility by moving from horror and romantic roles to Christmas roles. Is there a role that best showcases your talents as an actress?

Wow, thank you, that's very generous. I don't think I've quite figured that out yet! I really enjoy a good variety. I do especially love dark comedies, though, and I'd love to do a mockumentary in the vein of Christopher Guest one day. It's really all about the people and the material in the end.

You have a degree in Theatre from Dalhousie University. What do you remember about that time? What was your thesis about? Have you achieved the dreams and goals you had back then?

I had a mentor there that was very special to me and helped me through- a voice teacher named Peggy Redmond. I wouldn't be here today without her. I really loved being in an ensemble in the theatre program. But being a late bloomer,  in theatre school I played smaller parts and most of my roles were male roles because we didn't have enough guys in our class. I'm grateful that I've had the gift of time to come out of my shell. At the beginning of theatre school I could barely sing twinkle, twinkle little star in front of people without crying from fear, and now I am comfortable talking to the audience down the barrel of the camera so I'm proud of that.

Who is Hilary Jardine in everyday life? What are your hobbies and favourite foods?

I am a mom to two wonderful little boys, and I live a pretty simple life with my family on Vancouver Island in Canada. We have access to some pretty majestic outdoors and we love a good frolic in the woods or cold dip in the ocean. As for foods, I like a good variety, but I could never live without pasta, pizza or chocolate. I get over to see family in Scotland whenever I can.

What future projects are you working on besides those mentioned here? Can you give your fans a sneak preview?

Nothing I can share at the moment. Only time will tell… :)
