Alice and Steve, the TV series starring Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement
The six-episode series from Sex Education writer Sophie Goodhart explores friendship betrayal
“Alice and Steve” is the six-part series from the UK starring Nicola Walker (“The Split”), Jemaine Clement (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Joel Fry (“Cruella”), and Yali Topol Margalith (“The Tattooist of Auschwitz”). All six episodes will be available to stream on Monday, June 8, exclusively on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland and Hulu in the US.
Alice faces devastation when her best friend Steve begins dating her 26-year-old daughter Izzy. She stands to lose her best friend and her daughter in one fell swoop. Alice attempts everything she can to end the relationship. Steve, however, is more than ready for the attack, and what begins as a perfect friendship devolves into an all-out feud.
If this were simply a romantic comedy, the story would follow predictable patterns of reconciliation and acceptance. Yet the premise suggests something more uncomfortable—a meditation on the boundaries of friendship, the possessiveness that can masquerade as maternal concern, and the question of who truly owns our relationships. The choice to frame this as a “wrong-com” rather than a romantic comedy signals an awareness of the moral ambiguity at its center.
The series presents itself as a messy and complicated exploration of friendship, family, and love. This anti-romantic comedy asks the question: how far would you go for love or revenge? Will Alice forgive Steve? Will Steve and Izzy make a relationship work? Amongst all the questions hanging in the balance, one thing is certain—their lives will never be the same again.
“Alice and Steve” premiered to acclaim at CANNESERIES in April, receiving a standing ovation and picking up three awards from the festival juries including Best Series. The series will also have its US premiere at Tribeca Festival next month.
Created and written by Sophie Goodhart (“Sex Education”), produced by Clerkenwell Films (“Baby Reindeer”), and directed by Tom Kingsley (“Stath Lets Flats”), “Alice and Steve” premieres on June 8 with all six episodes available on Disney+. The series was commissioned from the UK by Lee Mason, Vice President, Scripted, Disney+ EMEA.
