Comedy movie The Invite: weekly orgies with Olivia Wilde and Penélope Cruz - plot

The Invite, the movie plot

The Invite is the comedy movie in production. The plot focuses on a couple who invites their neighbors, inaugurating an evening full of twists. It moves, thus, to reveal emotions repressed in the depths, and an unexplored sexuality. The couple, in fact, organizes weekly orgies.

"Can we put curtains on this window? I don't want them to be able to see inside our apartment" says Joe (Seth Rogen) to his wife Angela (Olivia Wilde) in the released trailer. "For me no gluten, no dairy, no meat, no sugar" says the guest Pína (Penélope Cruz).

"We feel a very strong bond with you" proceeds Pina, referring also to her husband Hawk (Edward Norton). "That's really very nice, thank you" responds Angela. "Why do I have the feeling that everyone knows something, except me?" asks Joe.

The Invite: movie cast

In the cast there is Olivia Wilde, also director of the movie: she has already directed Don't Worry Darling and Booksmart. Seth Rogen has worked recently in Good Fortune, Dumb Money and in the TV series The Studio and Invincible.

Penélope Cruz has acted recently in Ferrari, Parallel Mothers and The Bride, revisited version of the 1935 classic Bride of Frankenstein, with Frankenstein played by Christian Bale. Completing the cast is Edward Norton, appeared in Asteroid City and A Complete Unknown, and in the episodes of Extrapolations. It is the remake of The People Upstairs (Sentimental), Spanish movie from 2020 that grossed 648 thousand euros.

The Invite: movie production and filming

The production is by Annapurna Pictures and FilmNation Entertainment. Filming began in Los Angeles in May 2025, moving also to San Francisco, at the AP Giannini Middle School, on a BART train from Glen Park station to Balboa Park station, at the Make-Out Room, at the Castro Farmers' Market and at Molinari Delicatessen.

The Invite: critics' reviews and release date

The movie was presented at the Sundance Film Festival 2026, receiving positive reviews. For Variety "it is a fun movie, and in part this is due to the fact that I believe many people will recognize themselves in this movie, which, despite its stinging bravado, is human enough to propose a game of truth that remains authentic".

For The Guardian "when the jokes begin to get heavier and the evening takes on more serious tones, Wilde and her cast of highly experienced actors manage to handle a difficult change of tone without wavering".

For New York Magazine "it is primarily a comedy, and offers some genuine laughs, even though the interactions between the characters sometimes result so artificial that our 'falsity detectors' begin to sound rather early".

The movie is released in the United States on June 26, 2026.
