Interview with Larry Kasanoff, producer of the Mortal Kombat franchise
Larry Kasanoff is the producer of such films as Terminator and True Lies
How did you make the Mortal Kombat franchise?
Terminator 2 had, among other things, the most successful arcade game ever. I became friendly with the company that made it. They called one day, and kind of to tease me, told me they had an arcade game that was testing so well in Chicago, it might beat our T2 game. Well, I had to see this, and went to Chicago to play it. The second I did, I thought to myself, this is kind of like Star Wars meets Enter the Dragon (also my two favorite genres). I turned to the head of the game company, and said, ‘If you give me the rights to this, I promise I will produce it in every medium in the world – movies, TV, animation, live shows, music, etc.’ He thought it was just kind of a silly game, so it took me all that summer to convince him to give me the rights. Finally, he did, and I am proud to say, I have produced it in every medium in the world, and still am!
