Sean Kanan Interview: How to become the best version of yourself
Daily / Interview - 29 December 2024
From Beautiful to Writing a Book with Wife Michele

We meet Sean Kanan who plays the role of Deacon Sharpe in Beautiful and author of the book Way of the COBRA Couples, co-written with his wife Michele Kanan, also a producer, director and screenwriter. Way of the COBRA Couples is the third installment in the Way of the COBRA self-motivation book series. How did the idea for the book series come about?
I had been working on a personal development book for quite some time and during the Covid lockdown I made a conscious decision that I was not only going to survive, but that I was going to thrive during this period. I was working on ways to improve my own life and so I began writing about it. Way of the COBRA experienced tremendous success, and I want to follow it up with another book which was Welcome to the Kumite. This was also successful. Michele and I had talked about writing a book together for a long time and we decided to write about our own philosophies and relationship experiences. As a follow-up to my first two books, we ultimately co-wrote a guidebook sharing what worked for us in hopes it would help other couples and those looking for a lasting and meaningful relationship.
In this new book you are writing with your wife Michele. How does a strong and lasting partnership like yours come about?
Our strong partnership certainly did not come about by accident. It takes hard work, communication and patience. Obviously there needs to be a foundation of love and trust but additionally Michele and I have a shared set of goals and ethics.
If in the two previous books you gave the reader your solo point of view, now the reader can also share Michele's experience. What was it like writing with your partner? Do you have any anecdotes to share with the fans?
Because we are discussing relationships in this current book, it necessitated two voices. Michele came up with the idea to use a different font when we each speak so the reader knows specifically whose voice is weighing in. Michele and I each have our own home offices that are right next to each other. While working, we might not see each other for hours at a time but we know that the other one is right behind the wall and we often text to ask questions and to keep our writing communication open. There are no specific anecdotes that I can think of that we experienced while writing our book, but I can say that collaborating has once again been a really positive experience for us.
You have both been successful in your careers, even winning awards, but in the book you explain how you have been successful in your relationship as a couple. How important was Michele to your career and how important were you to hers? Is there really a half that can be more important than the other half?
Michele has been fundamental in me writing all my books. She always encourages and supports my writing. Neither of us believes that another person completes you. You must complete yourself. A great relationship is one where you are pushed and allowed to become the very best version of yourself and that is what has happened for us. As far as me helping her…I have worked in the entertainment business for 40 years and it’s given me tremendous insight through both my successes and my mistakes. With everything I have learned and know, I have done my best to be a source of information and support for Michele wherever I can.
What are Michele & Sean Kanan's upcoming projects?
Michele’s newest project is a streaming series based on the largest art heist in American history. She has been deep in production on this project. For me, I am eternally grateful that at the end of 2025, I will be celebrating my 25th year on The Bold & The Beautiful. This project has been the greatest privilege of my acting career.
