The appropriate language in the media to talk about gender identity, sexual orientation: the interview
The Style Guide for Journalists Reporting on Sex and Gender
The Women's Liberation Front (WoLF) has published a Media Style Guide for journalists to avoid unethical or confusing language related to women's rights.
You promoted the Media Style Guide for Journalists Reporting on Sex and Gender. Can you tell us what it is about?
The WoLF Media Style Guide is a tool for journalists reporting on issues that affect women and girls. The guide puts forth a framework for ethical and accurate reporting on issues such as sex and gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, male violence, the sex trade, and women’s rights. Our guidance, as opposed to some popular guidance that has been widely adopted, reflects a scientific understanding, is informed by a feminist perspective, and adheres to the strictest principles of journalism ethics including “truth and accuracy,” “fairness and impartiality,” and “humanity.”
