The Sheep Detectives, Molly Gordon Interview
The statements of Molly Gordon
What initially attracted me for this project was the script. Craig Mazin is obviously a legend, um, whether it be The Last of Us or Chernobyl or his work in comedy, I'm just such a big fan of his. And I just hadn't read a script that was so, I think it's so hard to write a family film that has that kind of wit, um, where adults can still be let into the story and I think he just nailed it. So I was really just incredibly moved by the story because the movie's also just about accepting that, like, people die and that grief exists and it's like, but it's a movie about sheep and sheep talk... it's like I don't know how he has all these things within it. So it was definitely the script and then meeting with Kyle and Lindsey and they were just so lovely.
The darker bits will go over children's heads but the, the wit, the wit will stay with the parents. Like, I don't know, there's some brilliant way to describe how like a four-quadrant family film really exists. But I don't know, I just think it, it, this movie has like a wit that is just so hard to pull off and it, it's, yeah, very like reading the script was so humbling cause I was like I don't know how you can create something like this.
It's about a shepherd who gets murdered, um, and his sheep end up solving the murder. Um, and I think it's also about family and connection and what we leave behind, um, and how people are more than what they seem and, um, that you can connect with your family at any time.
Rebecca Hampstead is definitely the outsider of the film. I, she's the only one with an American accent and, uh, she I think is a woman who is still finding herself, has, you know, not really figured out exactly what she wants to do with her life, just hasn't like found her way. And I think, um, you know, has a good connection with her mom but I think her dad has really not been in the picture. I like that this character doesn't like have everything together.
Nick Galitzine, um, my friend Rachel Sennott and Emma Seligman worked with on Bottoms and I thought he was amazing in that, so I was so excited to, to get to work with him. And he's been incredible, so funny, um, again, just like so lovely and loving and wonderful and I feel that we like I'm like, oh great, now I have a, another great friend for the rest of my life. And I love Nick G, I call him Gally Girl, uh, Nick G in this kind of like sassy conniving role, it's really fun and he looks great with his blonde hair.
The biggest highlight of this entire experience has been working with Emma. Um, she's like such a role model, um, in every way to me and as a performer, writer and as a person. So like watching her do everything made me laugh because she's so brilliant and so real. So she's also definitely like made me break every time. She's just so funny and smart and creates just such a, like a beautiful energy on set.
He comes from such a different world than us. He, you know, storyboards so heavily and, um, he like feels like he's already edited the movie in his mind because of his work in animation. And so it's been really cool to work with someone who comes at it from that perspective. Um, and yeah, he's just like such a nice guy and cares so deeply and is really connected to the story and, um, he's brought together just a really group, a really good group of people and Lindsey, the producer, um, is also wonderful.
