I think the success of the film has a lot to do with the script. The story is one that is relatable to most people. The fact that it was a true story that most people had never heard of, was also very intriguing to audiences. In addition with the current issues in our society, it helps give hope and inspiration to those seeking to overcome social injustices worldwide.
But a good script alone does not make a great film. The rest of the credit goes to the production team for putting together a cast and crew that was as talented and hardworking as they come.
