Lord of the Flies: the new Netflix series that reinterprets William Golding's classic
Netflix TV series arriving May 4, 2026: a faithful and contemporary adaptation of Golding's novel filmed in the forests
Lord of the Flies on Netflix: plot and setting of the TV series
The four-episode TV series Lord of the Flies, adapted by Jack Thorne and directed by Marc Munden, brings to the screen the story of English boys shipwrecked on a deserted island, inspired by William Golding's dystopian novel. The young protagonists, divided between “big ’uns” and “little ’uns,” try to maintain civility but soon conflicts and power struggles emerge. Filming took place in Malaysia, using rainforests and uninhabited islands to recreate a natural and unsettling atmosphere.
Production and technique: the touch of Marc Munden
Director Marc Munden adopted particular filming techniques to represent night scenes, using an infrared camera that transforms the green of the vegetation into pink and red tones, giving an almost dreamlike and realistic effect. This choice allowed respecting the time limits for filming with minors, while maintaining a suggestive aesthetic consistent with the tone of the story.
Cast and debuts
Many of the young actors, including David McKenna (Piggy), Winston Sawyers (Ralph), Lox Pratt (Jack), Ike Talbut (Simon), and Thomas Connor (Roger), are making their screen debut, selected through an open casting directed by Nina Gold, known for her work on Game of Thrones and The Power of the Dog. The experience on set allowed the boys to learn a natural approach to acting, far from theatrical exaggeration, thanks to Munden's guidance.
Themes in Golding's story
Jack Thorne emphasizes how the story reflects current issues related to identity and the difficulties boys face today, particularly their loneliness and how they react to feelings of isolation and anger.
Recent movies and series of the protagonists
David McKenna, who plays Piggy, previously worked in notable theatrical productions such as the West End cast of Les Misérables. Winston Sawyers and Lox Pratt are making their debut.
Lord of the Flies will be available on Netflix in the United States starting May 4, 2026.
