The Mosquito Bowl: Nicholas Galitzine in World War II War Drama

Netflix presents The Mosquito Bowl, a historical drama set during World War II, directed by Peter Berg and starring Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis. Filming began in August 2025, with the leads dressed as Marines in the 1944 Pacific setting.

Nicholas Galitzine plays John McLaughry, one of the young Marines involved in the story. Galitzine, known for his roles in Purple Hearts and Red, White & Royal Blue, collaborates with Netflix for the third time in this project, marking a genre shift for the actor as he takes on a story of war and sacrifice.

The plot centers on an American football game played on Christmas Eve 1944 at Guadalcanal between the 4th and 29th Marine regiments, an event known as The Mosquito Bowl. The field featured some of the best talents in college football, including former All-Americans from universities like Wisconsin, Brown, and Notre Dame, and nearly twenty players who had or would have NFL careers. The game represented a moment of normalcy and camaraderie before the Battle of Okinawa, the bloodiest battle of the war, in which fifteen of the sixty-five players lost their lives.

The cast also includes Bill Skarsgård, known for intense roles in Nosferatu and IT, Ray Nicholson in his first Netflix project after Smile 2, and Tom Francis, an actor with theater experience and television appearances. Pat McAfee, former NFL player and sports commentator, participates in the film, adding authenticity to the football scenes.

Peter Berg directs and co-writes the screenplay with Mark L. Smith. The production involves Brian Grazer and Alex Gayner through Imagine Entertainment. The film is based on Buzz Bissinger’s book “The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II,” which tells the story of these young athletes and their wartime experience, exploring their lives and the historical context.

Set images show the leads in period costumes, with Berg working to recreate the atmosphere and intensity of the era. The release date has not yet been announced, but the film is expected to debut on Netflix between late 2026 and early 2027, following post-production.
