Mayday, the Movie's Plot

Mayday is the new action and comedy movie coming out. The plot focuses on Lieutenant Troy Kelly's (Ryan Reynolds) reconnaissance mission on Soviet territory: he is forced to make an emergency landing in the Russian wilderness. Here he meets and befriends a Russian carpenter, Nikolai Ustinov (Kenneth Branagh), who agrees to help him escape from enemy territory in the hope of surviving.

Troy remembers the attack suffered in flight, and his ejection from the aircraft cabin, ending up on the ground with the parachute. "Thank goodness you didn't die," Nikolai tells him upon returning home. "Who are you and why am I tied to the bed?" Troy asks; "so that you wouldn't move during the surgery." "What surgery?" Troy worries; "I repaired an artery in your leg."

Then Nikolai asks him for help with a mission: "The Red Army will be looking for you," he says. Action scenes follow: "are all fighter pilots as sensitive as you?" he asks, "Yes," Troy responds.

Mayday, the Movie's Cast

Ryan Reynolds recently acted in Red Notice and in Deadpool & Wolverine, and will be in Animal Friends. Kenneth Branagh has worked on A Haunting in Venice and in episodes of Blue Eye Samurai, and will be in The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde; Maria Bakalova, who appeared in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and Bodies Bodies Bodies; Lovell Adams-Gray, who in the series Power Book II: Ghost is one of the protagonists.

The direction is by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who already directed Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and The Flash.

Mayday, the Movie's Production and Filming

The production is by Apple Original Films, Skydance and Maximum Effort, Reynolds' company. Among the movies produced by Maximum Effort are Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool 2, IF, Free Guy and The Adam Project. Filming of Mayday began on March 4, 2024 in Montreal and concluded on May 8, with the working title Blackbird. The movie is released on streaming on Apple TV on September 4, 2026.
