Albert Salmi, the character actor trained in the Strasberg method

Albert Salmi was born in Brooklyn on March 11, 1927 to a family of Finnish origin. After military service in the United States Army, he trained as an actor following the teachings of Lee Strasberg, master of the method that shaped his interpretive technique. His debut on the big screen came in 1958 with Richard Brooks' The Brothers Karamazov, an adaptation of Dostoevsky's novel where he worked alongside Yul Brynner and William Shatner. In the same year he acted in the western The Bravados alongside Gregory Peck. The two performances earned him the National Board of Review Award for best supporting actor, the most significant recognition of his career.

1958 represents the highest point of his film career. Salmi never received Oscar nominations, but his physical presence and ability to construct layered characters made him a sought-after face for character roles. Television became the territory where he developed most of his work: in the 1960s he participated in episodes of The Twilight Zone, Lost in Space, Gunsmoke and Combat!. In 1967 he received the Western Heritage Award for an episode of Gunsmoke in which he played a killer.

Between 1974 and 1976 he was Pete Ritter in the series Petrocelli, a role that ensured him work continuity. On the film front he continued to cover secondary parts: Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Brubaker (1980) with Robert Redford, Caddyshack (1980), Dragonslayer (1981) where he is Greil, Empire of the Ants (1977) and The Ambush Murders (1979). His filmography exceeds one hundred and fifty total appearances.

In the 1980s his activity slowed down. He worked in Hard to Hold (1984) and Breaking In (1989). In April 1990 he was found dead together with his wife Roberta Pollock Taper in their home in Spokane, Washington. Authorities determined it was a murder-suicide. Salmi was sixty-three years old and had three children. His career developed over three decades without reaching leading roles, but building a recognizable presence in the American television and film landscape through the solidity of his craft.
