The Return of Elle Woods: From Harvard Halls to High School Corridors
Elle: From the World of Legally Blonde is the TV series in the Legally Blonde franchise created by Laura Kittrell, exploring Elle Woods’ high school years in Seattle, long before the protagonist became the ambitious Harvard law student immortalized by Reese Witherspoon.
Production, which began in April 2025, represents the evolution of a project Amazon developed after acquiring MGM, while Legally Blonde 3 remained stuck in production limbo.
An Origin Inspired by Wednesday Addams
The origin of Elle is influenced by an unexpected source. Witherspoon stated in January 2025 that the inspiration came from watching Wednesday, the Netflix series starring Jenna Ortega. “I saw that series about Wednesday Addams and thought: ‘Oh, she was in high school.’ I loved it. I watched every episode. It was extraordinary,” Witherspoon said. “And I said to myself: ‘We should do Elle Woods in high school because I wanted to see who she was before college, before law school.’”
The series is co-directed by Laura Kittrell and Caroline Dries, with Jason Moore directing the first two episodes. Witherspoon, along with Marc Platt and Amanda Brown (author of the original Legally Blonde novel), serves as executive producer.
The Cast: New Faces and Comedy Veterans
The choice of Lexi Minetree to play young Elle Woods, announced in February 2025, is a bet on emerging talent. Minetree inherits an iconic character but does so in a context that allows her to build her own interpretation, free from direct comparison with Witherspoon’s performance.
Alongside her, June Diane Raphael and Tom Everett Scott play Eva and Wyatt Woods, Elle’s parents. Raphael, known for her work in Grace and Frankie, brings established comedic experience. Scott, who acted in My Life as a Zoo and more recently in episodes of 9-1-1: Lone Star, offers a reassuring presence in the series’ family core.
Chandler Kinney, who appeared in Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and The Rookie, plays Kimberly, while Jacob Moskovitz and Gabrielle Policano complete Elle’s group of friends as Miles and Liz. Zac Looker, Jessica Belkin, Logan Shroyer (known for This Is Us), and Amy Pietz enrich the cast with recurring characters.
A particularly significant appearance is that of James Van Der Beek as Dean Wilson, which is the actor’s final work before his passing. Van Der Beek, the unforgettable star of Dawson’s Creek, recently appeared in Walker and How I Met Your Father. David Burtka, known for How I Met Your Mother and more recently seen in Uncoupled, plays Chad, while Kayla Maisonet, who worked in Stuck in the Middle and The Fosters, is Tiffany.
Narrative Structure: Seattle in the 1990s
The series is set in Seattle in the 1990s, a period offering a culturally rich context. This temporal setting allows exploration of Elle’s personality formation in a pre-social media era, where high school social dynamics followed different codes than today.
Production began on April 2, 2025, with an approach balancing nostalgia for the 1990s and the need to make the character relevant for a contemporary audience. The series will debut on July 1, 2026, on Prime Video, with the first two episodes available at launch.
Series Renewal and Future Prospects
In January 2026, Amazon renewed Elle for a second season. The addition of Maitreyi Ramakrishnan to the cast for season two, announced in February 2026, brings the star of Never Have I Ever, one of the most successful recent teen comedies, into the series. Ramakrishnan will play Sam, a character joining Elle’s world in the new season. The Canadian actress recently worked on The Netherfield Girls and lent her voice to animation projects such as Pixar’s Turning Red.
