Resident Evil sequel: plot and connections with previous movies

Resident Evil is the horror movie coming out. It is the sequel to Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), reboot of the homonymous movie saga that began in 2002 with Resident Evil. In the 2021 movie the characters were younger, and their objective was to stop the Umbrella Corporation. The movies are inspired by the 1996 Capcom video game, created by Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara.

Resident Evil sequel: plot of the new movie

The plot does not take inspiration from the previous movie. In August 2025, director Zach Cregger revealed that the movie would be an original story set in the Resident Evil universe and would not include any characters from the games: "I won't tell Leon's story, because Leon's story is already told in the games. [The fans] have already seen it" he stated. He also confirmed he had never seen any of the previous Resident Evil movies and that the upcoming movie would be more closely based on the video game series, particularly Resident Evil 2 (1998), Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999) and Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil sequel: trailer of the new movie

In the trailer screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas the character medical courier Bryan (Austin Abrams) stumbles upon an abandoned house in a snowy field, desperately searching for a working phone.

He frantically calls his girlfriend and apologizes for the interrupted call shortly before, telling her that perhaps they will never speak again. The rest of the trailer is framed by terrifying zombies, including a pale and bloated monster sitting at the bottom of a sewer. Abrams runs down a deserted street chased by a horde of zombies from the rooftops, and zombie bodies splatter on him, as the creatures plummet to the ground.

Resident Evil sequel: cast and characters

Austin Abrams has acted in Weapons and in the tv series Euphoria. Paul Walter Hauser has the role of Carl, and also present will be Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Johnno Wilson, in the role of Max. Zach Cregger has already directed Barbarian and Weapons, and is working on the sequel. The movie Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City grossed 31.6 million dollars.

Resident Evil sequel: production, budget and release

The production is by Columbia Pictures, Constantin Film, Vertigo Entertainment and PlayStation Productions. Filming began in Prague in October 2025, and in February 2026 the movie was in the editing phase. It has a budget of approximately eighty million dollars, and is released in American theaters on September 18, 2026.

The movies in the series are Resident Evil (2002), Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016), and the reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021). The first seven movies are streaming on NOW and on the Starz channel. All are on-demand on Google Play, Chili, iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Microsoft Store
