The Bride! with Penélope Cruz, Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley
Maggie Gyllenhaal directs the new version of the Bride of Frankenstein, in theaters March 6, 2026
Maggie Gyllenhaal, Oscar nominee for the screenplay of The Lost Daughter, directs The Bride!, a reinterpretation of the Bride of Frankenstein myth who appeared on screen for barely three minutes without dialogue in James Whale’s 1935 classic. The project departs from traditional interpretations of the character, constructing a narrative that the director defines as rock-rooted.
The story unfolds in 1930s Chicago and follows Frank, a creature portrayed by Christian Bale, who persuades scientist Dr. Euphronious to generate a companion for him. Annette Bening plays the doctor who brings back to life a murdered young woman, giving shape to the Bride who takes the form of Jessie Buckley. The British actress, awarded at the Golden Globes for Hamnet, constructs a rebellious character marked by a dark spot on her lip, an element that Gyllenhaal identifies as “the scar of resurrection”.
The cast features Penélope Cruz in the role of Myrna, a figure described as enigmatic in information released by the production. The Spanish actress, Oscar winner for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, works alongside Peter Sarsgaard, the director’s husband, who plays a detective engaged in pursuing the protagonist couple. Jake Gyllenhaal, the director’s brother, completes the main core of performers in a role not yet specified in detail.
The London premiere on February 26 registered positive reactions toward the film’s approach and Jessie Buckley’s performance. Christian Bale stated he dedicated six hours daily to prosthetic makeup for the transformation into the monster, a process that drove him to scream during the preparation phase to release accumulated tension. Bale’s interpretation constructs a creature with melancholic traits, distant from the classic iconography of the monster.
The production invested eighty million dollars in the project, conceived for IMAX format projection. Gyllenhaal indicated Bonnie and Clyde, Rebel Without a Cause and Metropolis as visual references, reworking their aesthetics in a contemporary key. The narrative structure adopts the model of the outlaw couple on the run, with Frank and the Bride undertaking a series of criminal actions. The director describes their bond as “a deep love story based on a very imperfect connection”.
The film’s release was initially set for September 2025, but was moved to March 2026 to distance itself from Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein distributed on Netflix in November. The decision responds to a positioning logic that allows The Bride! to present itself as a distinct alternative to other productions inspired by Mary Shelley’s myth.
