The Social Reckoning: Social Media Misinformation, starring Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White – Plot

The Social Reckoning: movie plot

The Social Reckoning is the upcoming drama film. It is the sequel to The Social Network (2010), in which Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg creates the social network that becomes known as Facebook, but is later sued by two brothers who claim to be its true creators, as well as by a co-founder who was pushed out of the company.

The story centers on Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), a young Facebook engineer who—twenty years after the events of the first film—turns to Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) to expose the platform’s most closely guarded secrets.

The trailer, shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, depicts Haugen breaking her silence with the Wall Street Journal journalist: she reveals that Facebook executives were fully aware of the platform’s harmful effects on teenagers and its intentional spread of misinformation, which contributed to acts of violence.

A Zuckerberg advisor (Bill Burr) holds the CEO responsible for “a constant stream of misinformation you’re feeding into the system”; “When I say ‘no,’ the discussion ends there. I’m no longer a college student—it’s been two years, just look around,” replies Mark Zuckerberg (Jeremy Strong).

The Social Reckoning: movie cast

Jesse Eisenberg—who portrayed Facebook (now Meta) founder Mark Zuckerberg in the first film—has been replaced by Jeremy Strong. Mikey Madison won the Oscar for Anora, while Jeremy Allen White starred in Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere.

In addition to Bill Burr, the cast includes Wunmi Mosaku, Billy Magnussen, Betty Gilpin and Gbenga Akinnagbe. The film is directed by Aaron Sorkin, replacing David Fincher: the screenplay is based on the Wall Street Journal article series titled "The Facebook Files" (2021), which exposes the internal workings of the social media company and the harm associated with it. Sorkin previously directed Being the Ricardos, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Molly’s Game.

The first film grossed $224.9 million worldwide and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, winning three, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin.

The Social Reckoning: production and release date

The film is produced by Columbia Pictures and Escape Artists. Principal photography began in Vancouver on October 22, 2025, and wrapped on December 9 under the working title Goliath. Jeff Cronenweth serves as director of photography. The movie will be released in U.S. theaters on October 9, 2026.
