Interview with the director of the film The Hunoly, Evan Spiliotopoulos: 'Absolute good must also exist'
The horror movie The Unholy is out in theaters
The film also deals with the theme of miracles. What is your relationship with religion?
I was raised Greek Orthodox and was actually an altar boy. I find supernatural thrillers, no matter how dark, ultimately affirmations of faith. If you accept that absolute evil exists in the form of the Devil or demons then it stands to reason that absolute good must also exist -- you cannot have one without the other. Explorations of faith in the context of a supernatural thriller are a dramatization of I think everybody’s personal struggles and questions and our relationship with a hoped-for divine. The classics of the genre like Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist and The Omen have personal struggles of faith and belief at their very core just as in The Unholy.
