As I am primarily a writer I relied heavily on the existing screenplay while also creating a space where the cast could contribute ideas, lines or character details.  In a thriller, total improvisation is tricky as the scenes are crafted with an eye on mounting suspense.  However a rigid adherence to the written word makes for a stale and stilted experience so a happy medium is ideal.
