Reminders Of Him, Interview Vanessa Caswill and Colleen Hoover
The statements of Vanessa Caswill (director) and Colleen Hoover (screenplay)
"The first one that comes to mind is the idea of: can someone be more than the worst thing they've ever done? And I think that's a really interesting, messy, complex question to ask an audience. I think that's why the book is so successful, because it's so relatable. We've all made mistakes. Maybe not as big as Kenna's, but we've all made mistakes. And the idea of forgiveness, and whether or not you deserve it, and whether or not you can forgive yourself, I think is a really powerful theme."
"I think for me, it's a story about the complexity of grief and the fact that it's not a linear process. It's something that you carry with you, and it changes over time, but it never really goes away. And I think seeing Kenna navigate that, and seeing the other characters navigate their grief in relation to her, is what makes the story so emotional and so grounded."
"She has such a specific vision. I remember our first meeting, and she had this lookbook that was just so beautiful and so atmospheric, and it just perfectly captured the tone of the book. And I knew right then that she was the right person to tell this story. She has such a deep empathy for these characters, and it really shows in every frame of the film."
"It's been such a collaborative process. From the very beginning, I felt like my voice was heard and that she really respected the source material. But she also brought so much of her own creativity and her own perspective to it, which I think is what you want in an adaptation. You want someone who's going to honor the book, but also make it their own."
"I hope people come away from it feeling a little bit more hopeful, a little bit more empathetic, and a little bit more willing to give people a second chance. I think we live in a world that can be very judgmental, and I think a story like this is a good reminder that we're all human and we're all just trying our best."
"It's been the most incredible experience seeing these characters come to life. And I'm just so proud of the film we've made, and I can't wait for people to see it."
