Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the Plot of the Movie
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is an upcoming fantasy and action movie. The plot centers on Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock), who celebrates her twenty-first birthday traveling across the galaxy with her dog Krypto. There, she meets Ruthye Marye Knoll, and the two encounter a situation that leads them to hunt down Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), after he cold-bloodedly killed Knoll’s father.
Kara comes from Argo City on Krypton, a metropolis that was launched out of the exploding planet and spent years drifting in space. While the young Kal-El was too small to remember Krypton, Kara had to witness everyone around her die—including her parents, Zor-El (David Krumholtz) and Alura In-Ze (Emily Beecham)—before arriving on Earth.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Actor Interviews
“I have nice hair. It’s the best thing about me,” said Milly Alcock at the film’s presentation. “I accidentally hit someone, and I felt awful. It was a stunt double. I was about to punch him and then hit him by mistake. Someone almost got hurt, but luckily they were fine. There’s a huge risk in this job, and it’s scary to see your colleagues and think ‘No, no, no, don’t get hurt.’”
Regarding the screenplay by Ana Nogueira, Alcock added: “There is such a clear and concrete desire and conflict, and she is a person who has faced enormous trauma; her situation is really crazy, but unfortunately, it probably happened to other people too.”
Director Craig Gillespie praised Alcock’s performance: “She trained every morning throughout filming to stay fit. I threw unexpected challenges at her, like: ‘We just came up with this 360-degree thing, we’ll make 5 guys fly this way and you’ll have to kick and punch,’ and she learned everything in about 3 minutes, then boom, action. It was scary, though, and in those moments, you could make a mistake, hit someone who suddenly wasn’t there anymore, but it was fun.”
“I decided I wanted to include languages in this movie,” Gillespie continued. “Some actors said, ‘Really? We have to speak Kryptonian? What kind of language is that?’ I asked them, ‘Is it more dramatic and guttural? More flowery?’ Each place had its style, reflecting what that culture had experienced.”
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the Movie Trailer
“You managed to pee on the newspaper this time,” Kara says to the dog Krypto referring to the pee, in the released trailer. “I declare this twenty-third birthday will be the best.” Then she is surrounded by a group of people, presumably followers of Krem of the Yellow Hills: “Okay, looks like this won’t end well for you guys,” she says, then strikes them.
“Do others on your planet have your superpowers?” asks Ruthye; “No, it’s a small group of two,” she replies; “What’s Superman like?” “He sees the good in everyone. I see the truth.”
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the Movie Cast
Milly Alcock has previously worked on the TV series Upright and House of the Dragon, where she played Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. In the movie, since Kryptonians are healed and gain powers from yellow suns, Supergirl enjoys partying on planets with red suns where she can get drunk.
Matthias Schoenaerts plays Krem of the Yellow Hills: after killing Ruthye’s father, he sought a bounty hunter to eliminate her, but the hunter was a friend of Krem and warned her, so Krem hunted Ruthye, discovering Supergirl, her spaceship, and Krypto the Superdog.
Eve Ridley is Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young girl who recruits Supergirl on her journey to avenge her father’s death. Jason Momoa plays Lobo, an alien mercenary and bounty hunter from the utopian planet Czarnia.
Ferdinand Kingsley is Ruthye’s father, Elias Knoll, killed by Krem, while David Corenswet reprises the role of Kara’s cousin, Kal-El / Superman. The movie is directed by Craig Gillespie, who also directed Dumb Money, I, Tonya, and Cruella. The screenplay is by Oren Uziel and Ana Nogueira, adapted from the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, published since 2021. The comic series—eight issues, also illustrated by Bilquis Evely—was nominated for the 2022 Eisner Award.
