Klara and the Sun, the Plot of the Movie

Klara and the Sun is a drama and sci-fi movie currently in production. Klara (Jenna Ortega) is a solar-powered android: she is in a store and demonstrates observation and understanding skills superior to other robots. She notices everything happening outside, especially every child accompanied by their AA or adults. But the AAs avoid approaching the window, out of embarrassment and mainly fear of being replaced.

The Sun is perceived as a generous deity that spreads its nourishing substances. When a young girl, Josie (Mia Tharia), convinces her mother to buy Klara, the action moves to their home. Josie’s health is very unstable; she is forced to attend remote learning courses, and Klara tries to support her in the growth process but also to save her from illness and death.

“Glorious Sun, please make today my day. Let us find a friend,” says Klara in the released trailer. “We leave the lab with the intelligence of a small child, and then we learn everything from humans,” she adds. “Consider it a trial period, you are still under warranty, and I won’t hesitate a second to send you back,” says the owner Chrissie (Amy Adams). “Glorious Sun, I come to your home,” says Klara.

The cast includes Jenna Ortega, who recently worked on Beetlejuice and stars as the lead in the TV series Wednesday. Amy Adams stars in the TV series Cape Fear and appeared in the movie American Elegy, also starring in the upcoming movie Nightbitch. Also featured are Natasha Lyonne, in episodes of Poker Face; Simon Baker, lead in the series Devouring Boy Universe; and Steve Buscemi.

The direction is by Taika Waititi, director of Next Goal Wins and Oscar winner for the screenplay of Jojo Rabbit (read the interview). The screenplay is adapted from the novel Klara and the Sun by the Japanese-British writer Kazuo Ishiguro, published in 2021.

Klara and the Sun, the Movie Filming

The production companies are Heyday Films, Defender Films, and 3000 Pictures. Filming began in January 2024 at Silverlight Studios in Wanaka, then moved to Auckland. Michael Giacchino composed the soundtrack, after collaborating with Waititi on Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Next Goal Wins. The movie is set to release in theaters on October 23, 2026.
