Glenn Close, a Pillar of Film and Theater with Eight Oscar Nominations
Glenn Close, born March 19, 1947, a career spanning film, theater, and television with international acclaim
Glenn Close was born on March 19, 1947, in Greenwich, Connecticut. Her career spans over fifty years, covering theater, film, and television, with a consistent and internationally recognized presence. She is known for receiving eight Oscar nominations without winning the award, a record shared with few others in Academy history.
Her film debut came in 1982 with "The World According to Garp," where she played the feminist mother of the protagonist, earning her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In the following two years, she received two more nominations in the same category for "The Big Chill" (1984) and "The Natural" (1985). These recognitions marked Close’s entry into Hollywood after a theatrical background that had already earned her a Tony Award in 1984 for "The Real Thing."
In 1987, she portrayed Alex Forrest in "Fatal Attraction," a character that became emblematic in the psychological thriller genre and earned her a fourth Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actress. The following year, she starred in "Dangerous Liaisons" as the Marquise de Merteuil, a role considered one of the most significant in her career, which brought her another Academy Award nomination.
During the 1990s, she alternated between film and theater. In 1996, she played Cruella de Vil in "101 Dalmatians," a role that earned her a Golden Globe nomination. On Broadway, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1995 for "Sunset Boulevard." That same year, she received her first Emmy Award for the miniseries "Serving in Silence," portraying Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer.
In the new millennium, her work expanded into television with the series "Damages" (2007–2012), where she played attorney Patty Hewes. This role earned her two consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and a Golden Globe, strengthening her presence on the small screen. In 2011, she returned to film with "Albert Nobbs," a project she also co-wrote and produced, earning her sixth Oscar nomination and winning Best Actress at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Her seventh Academy Award nomination came in 2019 for "The Wife," where she portrayed Joan Castleman, the wife of a Nobel Prize-winning author. For this role, she received the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award, though not the Oscar. Her eighth nomination arrived in 2021 for "Hillbilly Elegy," in which she played the grandmother of J.D. Vance.
Among her recent projects is "Back in Action," an action comedy with Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz released on Netflix in January 2025. She is currently involved in "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery," the third installment of the Benoit Blanc saga, released in theaters in November 2025 and on Netflix in December, where she plays Martha Delacroix. Also scheduled for release in November 2026 is "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," an adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ novel, in which she portrays Drusilla Sickle.
Throughout her career, she has received three Tony Awards for theater, three Emmy Awards for television, and three Golden Globes. Her activities also include social engagement, having founded BringChange2Mind, an organization dedicated to combating the stigma surrounding mental illness.
