Project Hail Mary, the movie plot

Project Hail Mary is the sci-fi movie in production. Astronaut Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of himself or his mission. He slowly realizes he is the only survivor of a crew sent to the Tau Ceti solar system in search of a solution to a catastrophic event on Earth.

In his search for answers, Grace must rely on his vast scientific knowledge, ingenuity and human will, even as he realizes he may not be alone. His superior is Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller), and during this journey Ryland also meets an alien (James Ortiz). “I put the ‘not’ astronaut mode,” Gosling tells the government official (Sandra Hüller) in the trailer released at CinemaCon in Las Vegas: “I can’t even walk on the moon.” “You have the right stuff,” Gosling tells Hüller. “I have the wrong stuff.” “The world is counting on you,” Hüller tells him.

Ryan Gosling (read the interview) recently starred in The Fall Guy, Barbie and Blade Runner 2049, in the role of K. Sandra Hüller was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Anatomy of a Fall, and will be in the new movie with Tom Cruise about the most powerful man in the world. James Ortiz has acted in Saint Francis; Monks in Robes and Project Z: History of the Zombie Apocalypse. The cast also includes Milana Vayntrub, previously seen in Monsters and Die Hart.

The direction is by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who have previously directed 22 Jump Street and The Lego Movie. The screenplay is an adaptation of Andy Weir’s best-selling novel of the same name, published in 2021: the work has been described as “a compelling space odyssey” (New York Times), “a suspenseful space tale that zigzags—sometimes literally—in ingenious directions” (The Boston Globe). Project Hail Mary debuted at number three on the New York Times bestseller list.

The production is by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Lord Miller Productions and Pascal Pictures. Filming began on June 3, 2024 in the United Kingdom and concluded in October. The movie will be released in theaters on March 20, 2026.
