The Abandons, with Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey
Netflix's "The Abandons" Set to Premiere December 4. Kurt Sutter's latest production, "The Abandons," will debut on Netflix on December 4. The ten-episode series is set in the harsh landscape of the mid-19th century American West.
The narrative presents a raw, unfiltered examination of the conflict between two formidable female leaders representing diametrically opposed worlds. On one side stands Constance, portrayed by Gillian Anderson, while Lena Headey embodies her rival, Fiona.
The storyline centers on the fierce struggle for territorial control and the protection of homesteads amid clashing interests. This tension drives the central conflict throughout the series.
Constance Van Ness emerges as the merciless matriarch of the Van Ness dynasty, one of two rival families locked in a brutal struggle for land and power in the Washington Territory of 1854. The formidable character, portrayed by Gillian Anderson, stands at the center of the territorial conflict that drives the narrative tension throughout the series.
Fiona Nolan serves as the fierce matriarch of an adoptive family comprising four orphans. With her formidable Irish temperament, she guides her "tribe" in their desperate struggle for survival against the wealthy Van Ness dynasty, headed by Constance Van Ness.
Creator Kurt Sutter has revealed that the development of his project drew inspiration from the formative dynamics that led to the emergence of Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian mafia organization, as well as the iconic western television series "Bonanza."
Several cast members from "Sons of Anarchy," the acclaimed series produced by Kurt Sutter, have reunited for his new production "The Abandons." The ensemble includes Ryan Hurst, Michael Ornstein, and Clayton Cardenas.
Principal photography for the first season took place predominantly in Calgary, Canada, which provided the expansive and evocative landscapes essential for setting the western drama.
Despite being the series creator, Kurt Sutter reportedly departed from his role as executive producer and showrunner of "The Abandons" just weeks before the completion of filming in October 2024. The exit allegedly stemmed from creative differences with Netflix regarding the direction of the production.
