Dune: Part Three, the Plot of the Movie
Dune: Part Three is the upcoming sci-fi and epic movie sequel to the 2023 Dune 2 directed by Denis Villeneuve, where Paul Atreides joins Chani and the Fremen while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.
The story is set 17 years after the events of the first Dune novel. Paul Atreides—named Muad’Dib—as Emperor of the Known Universe, holds a power no single man should ever possess. Revered as a religious icon by fanatic Fremen, Paul faces hostility from the political houses he displaced when he took the throne, and a conspiracy brewing within his own sphere of influence.
As House Atreides begins to crumble around him due to the machinations of his enemies, the true threat to Paul looms over the woman he loves, Chani, and the future heir of his dynasty.
“If it’s a girl, what will we call her?” says Chani (Zendaya) in the released trailer. “She will be called Ghanima, because she must be strong. Like her mother,” replies Paul (Timothée Chalamet). “War feeds itself. The more I fight, the more our enemies strike back,” Paul states. Battle scenes follow: “How did he do it?” Chani asks her mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson). “Your father never started a war,” she answers.
“I’m not afraid to die. But I must not die again,” Paul concludes, while Chani also brandishes a knife. Scytale (Robert Pattinson) appears with a cold gaze and platinum blond hair.
Villeneuve revealed that the third chapter has a different tone, rhythm, and cadence. “If the first movie was more introspective, like a boy exploring a new world, and the second was a war movie, this one is richer in action and tension.” Paul Atreides is facing the consequences of excessive power and “tries to find a way out of this cycle of violence (…) As an Emperor able to foresee the future, he is in a way invincible. But there are people trying to overthrow him.”
In the first movie, Paul—the son of a noble family—seeks to avenge his father’s death, trying to save a planet that contains an important spice. Previously, Villeneuve stated in a podcast that it was important “for people to understand that for me it was really a diptych (…) if I make a third, which is in writing, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say, but if I return, it’s to do something different and with its own identity.” Regarding Frank Herbert’s books from which the screenplay is adapted, “they are harder to adapt. They become increasingly esoteric. It’s a bit more complicated to adapt. (Dune: Messiah) is a very dark and beautiful book. It’s the story of Paul and Chani and their difficulties in the relationship, the weight and incredible pressure of the world around them, and Paul tries to find a way out of this cycle of violence.” There is something in their love, in how they evolve over time and in their nature.
