The nominations for the 2026 Golden Globes were announced yesterday. For the Best Drama Movie category, five movies are competing. Frankenstein tells the story of scientist Victor: he creates a monster that escapes and hides in the countryside, where it observes a family’s life for a year. Here it gains minimal education, and when it realizes people will never accept it, it asks Victor for a companion like itself.
Hamnet is set in 1596, in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK, during the spread of the Black Plague. A young Latin teacher, William Shakespeare, penniless and abused by a violent father, falls in love with an eccentric young woman, Agnes. Known throughout the countryside for her healing skills using plants and potions, she moves with her husband to Stratford-upon-Avon and becomes a protective mother, while William’s career takes off in London.
It Was Just An Accident is the story of a small accident triggering a chain reaction of escalating problems. The Secret Agent is set under Brazil’s repressive regime in 1977: Marcelo, a forty-year-old man, moves to Recife after fleeing a violent past, seeking a fresh start on the northeastern coast.
Sentimental Value focuses on a family in Oslo, with Nora – a successful theater actress – whose life is shaken by the unexpected return of her father, Gustav, a renowned movie director. Gustav comes back into his daughters’ lives after a long absence, bringing with him a desire to make amends and revive his career.
Sinners tells the story of twin brothers who, trying to leave behind a troubled life, return to their hometown to start over but discover an unexpected evil awaits them.
For the Best Comedy Movie category, there is Blue Moon, set mostly on March 31, 1944, the opening night of Oklahoma!, the first musical by the creative partnership of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, with Rodgers’ former creative partner, Lorenz Hart, struggling with alcoholism and depression.
Bugonia follows two young conspiracy theorists who kidnap the powerful CEO of a major company, convinced she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.
Marty Supreme centers on Marty Reisman (Timothée Chalamet), a hustler turned ping pong champion: he goes from a career playing for bets in Manhattan to winning 22 titles, becoming the oldest to win a national paddle competition at 67.
No Other Choice is set in Japan, where young Man-soo – a paper production specialist with years of experience – loses his job. Searching for new employment opportunities, he clashes with his wife Mi-ri, who pressures him to cut unnecessary expenses, affecting his psyche.
Nouvelle Vague focuses on the filming of Breathless / À bout de souffle, one of the first feature movies of the French New Wave era, in 1959.
One Battle After Another features Bob Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio) – an eccentric and disheveled revolutionary – trying to save his daughter when an enemy from his past reappears.
For Best Animated Movie, contenders include Arco, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle, Elio, Kpop Demon Hunters, Little Amélie or The Character of Rain, and Zootopia 2.
For Cinematic And Box Office Achievement, nominees are Avatar: Fire And Ash, F1, Kpop Demon Hunters, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Sinners, Weapons, Wicked: For Good, and Zootopia 2.
For Best Foreign Movie, the nominees are It Was Just An Accident, No Other Choice, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sirāt, and The Voice Of Hind Rajab.
For Best Actress in a Drama, nominees include Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), Julia Roberts (After The Hunt), Tessa Thompson (Hedda), and Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby).
For Best Actor in a Drama, nominees are Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein), Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent), and Jeremy Allen White (Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere).
For Best Actress in a Comedy, nominees include Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked: For Good), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another), Amanda Seyfried (The Testament Of Ann Lee), and Emma Stone (Bugonia).
For Best Actor in a Comedy, nominees are Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), George Clooney (Jay Kelly), Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Lee Byung-Hun (No Other Choice), and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia).
