Super Mario Galaxy: Nintendo and Illumination's Space Odyssey

After the global success of the first chapter -  which grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide in 2023 - the sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is getting ready to debut on the big screen. The production is once again handled by the Illumination and Nintendo duo, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and written by Matthew Fogel. The film promises a significant visual leap, taking Mario and his friends across volcanic planets, underwater depths and neon-lit, zero-gravity expanses.

On the voice cast front, Chris Pratt returns as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Notable new additions include Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. Then, on March 9th, 2026, during a Nintendo Direct dedicated to the final trailer, Donald Glover was announced as the voice of Yoshi, Luis Guzmán as Wart and Issa Rae as Queen Honeybee.

The story sees Mario and Luigi face a new threat: Bowser Jr., determined to free his father from captivity and restore the Koopa family's dominion. Together with old and new companions, the brothers travel among the stars to stop the young heir. Along the way, they explore wildly different planets, including a volcanic world, an underwater planet and a neon tech-land filled with gravity-defying obstacles. Fan-favorite character Birdo also makes an appearance among the villains.

Wart, the frog king antagonist best known as the final boss of Super Mario Bros. 2, will be voiced by Luis Guzmán, a veteran of films such as Boogie Nights and Traffic. Issa Rae will play Queen Honeybee, ruler of the Honeyhive Galaxy, widely known to audiences from the HBO series Insecure.

The soundtrack is once again entrusted to Brian Tyler, who will return to weave Koji Kondo's classic themes together with sweeping new orchestral arrangements. With a release date set symbolically in the month celebrating the franchise's fortieth anniversary, the film aims to surpass the box office records set in 2023 and cement the future of Nintendo's animated projects.
