The Backrooms 2 Movie: The latest on the horror sequel
Discover The Backrooms 2, the horror film by Kane Parsons starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve
The Backrooms 2, the possible plot of the movie
The Backrooms 2 is the horror movie not yet in production. It would be the sequel to The Backrooms, now in theaters, which focuses on a patient who disappeared into a strange dimension beyond reality: the therapist is forced to face the unknown to bring him back to reality.
The twenty-year-old director and YouTuber Kane Parsons has confirmed that he is not done with The Backrooms and that there were already things "in the works right now." He also mentioned that the YouTube web series from which the movie is derived would continue. Roberto Patino, screenwriter of the series Westworld, was initially hired to write the screenplay for The Backrooms, but in the end, the role was given to Will Soodik, author of movies like Homeland, Ash vs. Evil Dead, and Westworld. Patino remained involved in the project as an executive producer.
The development of the sequel is still in the early stages, which means that A24 has not yet given the green light to the project and that the actors have not yet been chosen. Being Parsons the youngest director in Hollywood history to debut at number one in the box office, the production will certainly leverage this record for a possible sequel or a related movie.
Moreover, the director enjoys a fanbase born on YouTube that follows him in his experiences outside the internet: according to the analysis company Brighter Path, Parsons’ popularity on YouTube is one of the main reasons why The Backrooms recorded a record-breaking opening weekend: "The company estimates that Kane Pixels’ fandom alone will represent 22% of the weekend opening demand, being the single determining factor," said YouTuber and director of Iron Lung, Mark Markiplier Fischbach, as reported by Variety. "We even noticed, during Thursday previews, a group of viewers under 35 who consider certain releases as moments they want to participate in collectively and in real time. The difference with The Backrooms also lies in the depth of the pre-existing relationship of the audience with the intellectual property. These fans did not just watch the videos but actively expanded it. They wrote stories, discussed theories, created videos, and contributed firsthand to the narrative universe. This creates a fundamentally different type of fandom."
The Backrooms 2, the possible cast of the movie
Probably in the sequel, Chiwetel Ejiofor will return as Clark, owner of a furniture store and failed architect; Renate Reinsve as Dr. Mary Kline, Clark’s therapist; Mark Duplass as Phil, a scientist at Async and researcher of The Backrooms.
The production will be by 21 Laps, Atomic Monster/Blumhouse, Odd Fellows, and co-financier Chernin Entertainment. Alongside Iron Lung by Markiplier
The production will be by 21 Laps, Atomic Monster/Blumhouse, Odd Fellows, and co-financier Chernin Entertainment. Alongside Iron Lung by Markiplier and Obsession by Curry Barker, and even The Amazing Digital Circus, releasing next weekend (with an estimated box office of over 13 million dollars), The Backrooms fits into a trend where YouTube content creators and some emerging content find new success at the box office. The movie cost ten million dollars, grossing so far 126.2 million.
Parsons himself will direct, while James Wan (The Conjuring) and Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) will be producers along with Patino, Michael Clear, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine, Osgood Perkins, Chris Ferguson, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kori Adelson.
Origin of The Backrooms: from creepypasta to viral horror web series
The original short movie set in the 1990s - a web series titled The Backrooms (Found Footage) - directed by Parsons himself, tells the fall of a young director into another dimension, which leads him to wander in a yellow, empty, and labyrinthine office that may or may not host otherworldly beings. The title and setting of the movie draw inspiration from the imagery of a creepypasta published on the website 4chan in 2019: it is an internet phenomenon derived from the practice of copypasta characterized by horror themes and later spread on the internet through forums, social networks, and
