What Happens at Night is the mystery and thriller movie in production. The plot focuses on a married couple (Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a child.

The two settle into a cavernous and largely deserted hotel, where they encounter bizarre characters, such as an exuberant singer, a depraved businessman, and a charismatic healer. But here nothing is as it seems: as the couple struggles to claim the child, it appears they know less and less about themselves and the life they have built together.

Jennifer Lawrence recently acted in Die, My Love, Causeway, and No Hard Feelings: she won the Oscar for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who recently worked on One Battle after Another, Killers of the Flower Moon, Don’t Look Up, and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. With Lawrence, they acted together in Don’t Look Up. “Is there anything I should absolutely know about Martin Scorsese before starting?” the actress asked DiCaprio during a double interview with Variety; “he’ll give you a lot of movie references. Usually they’re in DVD format. And if you don’t have a DVD player, get one. Sometimes he does screenings just for one sequence of a movie. If there’s something he wants you to capture from an old movie, or the rhythm of something, he might have an entire movie screened just for a specific scene he wants to see”.

What Happens at Night, the movie’s production and filming

Indeed, the movie will be directed by Martin Scorsese, who recently directed The Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon itself, and the docu-series Pretend It’s a City (read the interview). The screenplay is adapted from the novel What Happens at Night (2020) by Peter Cameron.

The production is by DiCaprio’s Appian Way, Apple Original Films, Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions, and StudioCanal. Filming began in March 2026 in the Czech Republic.
