Interview with music producer and composer Marcus Bell: ' Your music has to be the right sentiment'
Marcus Bell is also in the Netflix film Operation Christmas Drop.
You recent book is Bellringer Branding Bible. How do you create a brand through music?
It's all about the sound and the writing style. Every artist has a voice, the problem is that most developing artists focus on sounding like their favorite celebrity singer and the result is they don't have a distinctive brand for the marketplace. There is a framework I use when I'm coaching artists. You have to go through imitation, emulation, and then innovation. Imitation is important to develop your skill and proficiency at the craft of music. Emulation is where you sound similar but not exactly like someone else. Innovation is when you break away from your references and create something that is uniquely you. The greatest artists that are known in the world have accomplished this. You know when you hear Beyonce's voice or Jennifer Lopez's singing. You don't even have to be a great singer or rapper skill wise to have a distinct voice and brand.
