The plot of Les Misérables: redemption and justice in 19th century France

Les Misérables is the upcoming drama movie. The plot follows the story of Jean Valjean (Vincent Lindon), an ex-convict who, after serving nineteen years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread, attempts to rebuild his existence.

Hunted by inspector Javert (Tahar Rahim), Valjean embarks on a path of personal redemption that leads him to become a new man. On his journey he adopts young Cosette and seeks to do good in a society marked by poverty, inequalities and injustices.

Vincent Lindon won the Palme d'Or for The Measure of a Man and acted in the movies L'Innocent and Another World.

Tahar Rahim worked in A Prophet, Madame Claude and in the TV series The Serpent. For his performance in The Mauritanian he received a Golden Globe nomination.

Camille Cottin plays Mme Thénardier. The actress acted in House of Gucci and in the TV series Call My Agent! and Killing Eve.

Fred Cavayé directs the new adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel

The direction is by Fred Cavayé, author of Anything for Her, Point Blank, Mea Culpa and So Far So Good.

The movie represents a new cinematic adaptation of Victor Hugo's famous novel, after numerous adaptations that have marked the history of French and international cinema.

Filming between Saint-Macaire, Bordeaux and the Île-de-France region

Filming of Les Misérables began in July 2025 in Saint-Macaire, then continued in Bordeaux, place du Chapelet, Château de Fère in Aisne, Compiègne and at the Château de Chambly.

Production also involved the studios of Bry-sur-Marne in Val-de-Marne and TSF Studios 77 in Seine-et-Marne.

The movie will be released in French cinemas on October 14, 2026.
