The Carpenter’s Son, the Movie’s Plot
The Carpenter’s Sonis the upcoming horror movie. The plot centers on a family hiding in Egypt during the Roman Empire. The son (Noah Jupe), known only as ‘the boy,’ is led to doubt by another mysterious child and rebels against his guardian, the carpenter (Nicolas Cage), revealing innate powers and a destiny beyond his understanding. As he exercises his power, the boy and his family become targets of horrors, both natural and divine.
The plot is inspired by the Infancy Gospel of Thomas: this describes the life of the child Jesus from five to twelve years old, with fanciful and often malevolent supernatural events. One of the episodes involves Jesus creating clay birds and then bringing them to life; later Jesus kills a child, when at the age of one he curses a boy, causing the child’s body to wither into a corpse. Subsequently, Jesus kills another child through a curse when the child accidentally bumps into him. When Joseph and Mary’s neighbors complain, Jesus blinds them; he resurrects a friend who dies falling from a roof and heals another who has cut his foot with an axe. “For years we have lived in hiding, driven from every home,” says the carpenter in the released trailer, “he carries with him a power he cannot understand. A power he cannot contain.” “Is he my father?” the boy asks a friend; “who put that in your head?” she responds. Then the boy grips a snake.
