KPop Demon Hunters 2, the plot of the movie
KPop Demon Hunters 2 is the animated movie currently in development. It’s the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, now streaming, which tells the story of three members of the K-pop group Huntrix—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—who lead double lives as secret demon hunters. The three girls are committed to protecting their fans from supernatural forces: the Huntrix clash with a rival boy band, the Saja Boys, whose members are secretly demons.
In an interview with Screen Rant, director Maggie Kang expressed interest in a potential sequel and parallel stories to enrich the movie’s universe. She stated that many questions raised remain unanswered and that “there are many angles we can explore,” such as potential backstories for Mira and Zoey.
Director Chris Appelhans told People that “there are so many unanswered questions, in a positive sense, and so many paths that could be their story.”
Matthew Belloni of Puck noted that, based on the 2021 agreement between Sony and Netflix, Sony holds “the contractual right to produce” future episodes of KPop Demon Hunters.
Netflix is reportedly considering various follow-up projects, including two sequels, a television series, a short movie, and a theatrical musical. Netflix Films President Dan Lin commented that the company was “excited to explore what the next adventure for Huntr/x might be. The success of KPop Demon Hunters stems from its original and fresh story, so if we were to undertake a sequel,” they would take time to ensure that any “future story we tell with our favorite demon hunters maintains the charm and uniqueness of the first movie.”
A timeframe for the movie’s release has already been decided, set for 2029.
KPop Demon Hunters 2, the cast of the movie
Along with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the three voice actresses will likely return to the cast. Arden Cho will voice Rumi, the solo singer and leader of Huntr/x, who wields a saingeom sword in combat: she is the daughter of a demon father and a deceased demon hunter mother.
May Hong will be Mira, the lead dancer of Huntr/x: she wields a gokdo weapon in combat, comes from a wealthy family, and is considered the black sheep of her family due to her rebellious nature.
Ji-young Yoo will portray Zoey, the main rapper, lyricist, and maknae of Huntr/x: she wields shinkal throwing knives in combat, is Korean American, and grew up in Burbank.
Maggie Kang confirmed that the idea for KPop Demon Hunters came in 2018, while she was working on the production of Wish Dragon: she wanted to create a movie using Korean culture, and immersed herself in mythology and demonology, envisioning something visually unique compared to traditional media. When developing the story of the demon hunters, they decided to play with Korean shamanism, particularly the historical use of singing and dancing as part of Korean female shamans’ rituals.
The movie grossed $25 million at the box office, and in September, Netflix announced that the movie had surpassed 266 million views, overtaking the first season of Squid Game to become Netflix’s most-watched title.
