Terrestrial movie plot: Hollywood Hills visit turns into an alien mystery
Terrestrial is the upcoming sci-fi thriller movie. The plot centers on three friends – Vic, Ryan and Maddie – who travel to the Hollywood Hills to visit their friend Allen Perkins. Allen, an aspiring science-fiction writer, welcomes them into his large property, but his eccentric behavior and his reluctance immediately create a sense of unease.
Vic discovers a room in the house entirely dedicated to The Neptune Cycle, a science-fiction book series by the famous author S.J. Purcell, whom Allen idolizes. Allen enthusiastically explains the mythology of the series, including an alien species known as the Voxti and their belief in hidden human potential.
From that moment, strange phenomena blur the boundaries between reality and imagination. What begins as a weekend visit among friends gradually turns into a spiral of paranoia and increasingly intense conflicts, forcing the group to confront long-buried resentments, unrealized ambitions and the consequences of obsession.
Terrestrial cast: Jermaine Fowler, James Morosini and Pauline Chalamet lead the sci-fi thriller
The cast includes Jermaine Fowler, known for the TV series Superior Donuts and the movie Coming 2 America; James Morosini, recently seen in I Love My Dad and the episodes of The White Lotus; Pauline Chalamet, sister of Timothée Chalamet, who appeared in Lady Business and the TV series The Sex Lives of College Girls.
The other cast members are Edy Modica and Flora Wildes. The movie is directed by Steve Pink, who previously directed Hot Tub Time Machine and About Last Night.
Terrestrial reviews: dark comedy and psychological sci-fi elements at Fantasia Film Festival
The movie was presented at the 2025 Fantasia International Film Festival, receiving positive reviews.
According to The Film Stage, it "features pitch-black humor, a fact that will not prepare you for the darkness the filmmakers are willing to explore."
According to Variety, it is "a slyly macabre comedy, filled with misunderstandings, lies and illusions (...) although the lack of major recognizable names may limit its initial visibility, the combination of genres, subversive humor and intelligent, unpredictable storytelling should earn the independent production an enthusiastic following."
According to Next Best Picture, "Allen's downward spiral is not only about mental illness; it is about a very human need to be seen as important, as worthy. The movie asks: what happens when the dream is not real, but we continue to live as if it were? It is a sharply written and emotionally unstable journey that blends genre thrills with realistic drama in its exploration of ego, madness and the lies we tell ourselves to survive."
