Terrestrial plot: a weekend among friends turns into paranoia

Terrestrial is the upcoming sci-fi thriller directed by Steve Pink. The story follows three friends—Vic, Ryan and Maddie—who travel to the Hollywood Hills to visit their longtime friend Allen Perkins. An aspiring science-fiction writer, Allen welcomes them into his secluded mansion, but his increasingly eccentric behavior quickly creates an atmosphere of unease.

While exploring the house, Vic discovers an entire room devoted to The Neptune Cycle, a fictional science-fiction book series written by the celebrated author S.J. Purcell. Allen enthusiastically explains the mythology behind the novels, including the alien race known as the Voxti and their belief in humanity's hidden potential. As strange events begin to unfold, the line between reality and imagination starts to blur.

What begins as a casual reunion among friends gradually spirals into paranoia, psychological conflict and buried resentments, forcing each of them to confront failed ambitions, unresolved relationships and the destructive consequences of obsession.

Terrestrial cast

The cast stars Jermaine Fowler, known for Superior Donuts and Coming 2 America, alongside James Morosini, who recently appeared in I Love My Dad and The White Lotus. Pauline Chalamet, known for The Sex Lives of College Girls and Lady Business, also stars in the film.

The supporting cast includes Edy Modica and Flora Wildes.

Director, reviews and release date

The film is directed by Steve Pink, whose previous credits include Hot Tub Time Machine and About Last Night.

Terrestrial premiered at the 2025 Fantasia International Film Festival, earning positive reviews. The Film Stage praised its "pitch-black sense of humor," noting that audiences are unlikely to anticipate how dark the story eventually becomes.

Variety described it as "a slyly macabre comedy filled with misunderstandings, lies and delusions," adding that although it lacks major box-office stars, its inventive blend of genres, subversive humor and unpredictable storytelling could help the independent production build a devoted audience.

According to Next Best Picture, Allen's psychological collapse is not simply about mental illness but about "the deeply human need to feel important and worthy." The review highlights the film's ability to combine genre thrills with emotionally grounded drama while exploring ego, obsession and the lies people tell themselves to survive.

Terrestrial opens in U.S. theaters on August 14, 2026.
