The TV Series Reviews

The first season received positive reviews. For CNN "engaging and organic from virtually the beginning, The Chi will inevitably invite comparisons to The Wire, the quintessential drama about the perils of life in blighted neighborhoods. Yet this detail-rich look at intersecting paths, spanning generations, quickly carves out a niche all its own, where tragedy begets tragedy and revenge has its consequences."

For Slate "the core of the story, a group of Black men caught up in senseless and endemic violence, feels familiar, albeit with excellent performances, particularly Mitchell's. It's the marginal stories and characters that prove original."

For Boston Globe "[Lena Waithe] gives us a large cast of Chicagoans, each well-drawn, and then slowly connects them to one another – sometimes a bit awkwardly – over the course of the first four episodes made available to critics. What at first might seem like a somewhat random selection of neighborhood people becomes increasingly intentional. The focus becomes sharper and sharper."

For Variety "if at times its ambitions exceed its execution, the series' generosity and seriousness of purpose lend depth to its more successful storylines."
