Crime 101: a new battle between thief and detective
Coming to theaters on February 13, 2026
"Crime 101" is set to mark the beginning of the 2026 cinematic year with a thriller that reimagines the classic dynamics of the genre. Based on Don Winslow's novella of the same name, the film portrays the confrontation between a methodical thief and a stubborn detective in a duel of cunning and perseverance. The direction comes from Bart Layton, a filmmaker who has proven his expertise with works such as "American Animals" and "The Imposter," and who also takes on the role of screenwriter for this project.
February 13, 2026, will mark the American theatrical release of this production, a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios, Working Title Films, The Story Factory, Wild State, and Raw. Distribution will follow a dual track: Amazon MGM Studios will handle the North American market, while Sony Pictures Releasing International will manage worldwide distribution.
The world premiere took place in London on January 28, 2026, where the complete cast presented this 140-minute feature. The debut comes several months later than initially scheduled, as the film was originally slated for release in 2025. Promotional materials began with the first official trailer released in October 2025.
The narrative structure revolves around Davis, played by Chris Hemsworth, a jewelry thief who operates along the Pacific coast following a strict personal code. Mark Ruffalo portrays Detective Lou Lubesnick, the only one who supports the theory of a lone thief against the prevailing hypothesis of an organized gang. But Davis, attempting to execute the final heist of his career, deviates from his own rules.
Enriching the plot is the character played by Halle Berry, an insurance agent whose path intersects with the protagonist's under unexpected circumstances. The story unfolds along Los Angeles' Highway 101, the element that gives the film its title and serves as the geographical backdrop for the events.
The ensemble cast includes leading actors from the Hollywood scene. Barry Keoghan, known for his performances in "The Banshees of Inisherin" and "Eternals," Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, and Jennifer Jason Leigh join veteran Nick Nolte. The cast also features Tate Donovan, Babak Tafti, Payman Maadi, Deborah Hedwall, Devon Bostick, Paul Adelstein, Drew Powell, and Matthew Del Negro.
Filming began in October 2024, following a cast reorganization that saw the departure of Pedro Pascal, initially planned alongside Hemsworth, due to scheduling conflicts. The technical department includes Erik Wilson as cinematographer, while editing was entrusted to Jacob Secher Schulsinger and Julian Hart. The soundtrack, a structural element for a thriller, bears the signature of Blanck Mass, the pseudonym of composer Benjamin John Power.
The production has sparked particular interest among fans for the joint presence of Hemsworth and Ruffalo, performers whom audiences are accustomed to seeing together in Marvel films, now engaged in diametrically opposed roles within a crime narrative.
