Beast: The Australian Film Featuring Russell Crowe
Releasing on April 10, 2026
The Australian film Beast, directed by Tyler Atkins, will be released in the United States on April 10, 2026, with the Australian release scheduled for April 23. The screenplay, co-written by Russell Crowe and David Frigerio, is set in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA) and follows Patton James, played by Daniel MacPherson, a former MMA champion who left his career to focus on his family, supporting his wife Luciana and their son. Luciana is portrayed by Kelly Gale, a Swedish-Australian model known for her work with Victoria’s Secret.
When Patton’s younger brother, Malon, suffers a serious injury and faces financial troubles with criminal elements, Patton decides to return to the ring for one last fight in the ONE Championship circuit, training under Sammy, the veteran played by Russell Crowe. Crowe plays an experienced mentor, aware of the physical and emotional demands of the sport. Sammy’s character is central to preparing Patton for the final match against the reigning champion, a younger, faster fighter determined to dismantle the legacy of the former champion. The narrative centers on this generational clash, which carries symbolic as well as athletic significance.
Amy Shark, an Australian singer-songwriter, makes her acting debut in this film, adding a new element to a production that emphasizes Australian authenticity. The cast also includes former National Rugby League player George Burgess, Luke Hemsworth, and Bren Foster. Filming took place in Sydney and Port Kembla, with scenes shot in Bangkok during a real ONE Championship event in front of ten thousand spectators, a choice that adds realism to the fight sequences.
Beast runs for 114 minutes and is rated R for strong language, graphic violence, and sexual content with nudity. The screenplay, based on an original story by Frigerio and developed with Crowe, explores themes such as personal legacy, family sacrifice, and the choice between accepting the past or risking everything for one last chance at redemption. The production, led by John Schwarz, David Frigerio, Michael Schwarz, and Tim O’Hair, aims to compete with major American productions while maintaining a strong Australian identity. The trailer, released in February 2026, features intense training sequences and physical confrontations that highlight the toll of a life devoted to fighting.
Kelly Gale’s role as the protagonist’s wife extends beyond emotional support. Luciana is the reason Patton left his career but must also confront her husband’s return to a dangerous environment. The dynamic between the two characters adds depth to the story, avoiding typical sports genre clichés. The cast also includes Mojean Aria as Malon, the brother whose desperate situation triggers the plot. Setting the story within the ONE Championship circuit, one of the leading MMA organizations globally with a strong presence in Asia, gives the film an international scope that transcends traditional Australian cinema.
The film aims to combine action and family drama, featuring a cast that blends established names with new faces, and a production that emphasizes realism through authentic shooting locations.
